Motivating Young Readers

Reading in the home creates strong literacy habits, and produces stronger readers. That is easier said than done, sometimes. How can I get my children reading more? Here are some ways to motivate reading:

1) Read the book and then watch the movie. My son and I recently did this with Ivan the Great!

2) Theme a day or week around a book and visit places that connect to the theme, setting, characters, etc.

3) Incentive reading 📖 with things that your kiddos enjoy. An example I have used is a rewards chart and allowing my son to choose the (reasonable) reward of his choice after finishing a chapter book.

4) Allow choice in reading selections. Choice embraces individuality and responsibility, but also will allow for more interest. If they like comics, let them read comics!

5) my personal favorite is modeling good, and frequent, reading habits.

6) Make it a routine. Have a set time to read individually or as a family.

7) Set the stage, literally! Allow for a re-enactment or play of the story designed by nine other than your kiddos. (This is a great comprehension tool as well). 8) Never use reading as a form of punishment. Try to model and show how fun reading can be. 9) Audio books or devices specifically for reading are a great way to motivate our tech savvy learners, and to take reading anywhere!
